Marine Safety

The Marine Safety/Environmental Protection program of The Coast Guard Auxiliary is extensive, ever changing, somewhat overwhelming, and critically important. The scope of this multi-faceted department provides many areas for auxiliarists to serve their country through the United States Coast Guard.

Although some tasks have been completed and goals accomplished, the program in still under development in Division 4. All members are encouraged to participate in whatever part of the MS/EP program interests them.

Some of the opportunities available are: Assistants in lifeboat inspection, container inspection, pollution investigation, harbor safety, specialist, and marine safety watchstander. A complete listing of the PQSS is available on the M Department website.

Some suggestions for becoming active in the MS/EP programs would include:
1. Read as much as you can on the MS website about the programs that are available to see what piques your interest.
2. Take one or more of the core courses such as IIMS, IMSEP, and Good Mate.
3. Take a look at all the PQSS and decide on one. They all have one or more of the core courses as prerequisites.
4. Talk to other MS personnel to find out the areas of greatest need in your area.

In summary, MS/EP provides great potential for Auxiliarists to contribute to the needs of the Coast Guard, while at the same time providing education, involvement, advancement, and satisfaction for themselves. We need to work together on this to make it go!
